What is Dilaudid?
Dilaudid 8mg is an opioid pain medication. An opioid is sometimes called a narcotic.
Dilaudid 8mg is used to treat moderate to severe pain.
Warnings
You should not take Dilaudid if you have severe breathing problems or a blockage in your stomach or intestines.
Never use Dilaudid 8mg in larger amounts or for longer than prescribed. Do not crush, break, or open an extended-release pill. Swallow it whole to avoid exposure to a potentially fatal dose.
Dilaudid may be habit-forming, even at regular doses. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Never share the medicine with another person. MISUSE OF NARCOTIC PAIN MEDICATION CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription.
How should I use Dilaudid?
Take Dilaudid exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Never use Dilaudid in larger amounts or for longer than prescribed. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.

In case of a missed dose, what should I do?
Dilaudid is used to treat pain, so you are unlikely to miss a dose. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip any missed dose. To make up for a missed dose, do not take extra medicine.
Overdosing: what happens?
Call 1-800-222-1222 for Poison Help or seek emergency medical attention. Overdosing on hydromorphone, especially in children or others without a prescription, can be fatal. Symptoms of an overdose include drowsiness, muscle weakness, cold and clammy skin, pinpoint pupils, and fainting.
